David Whitney is a Theatre Maker and Creative Learning Practitioner based in East Anglia.
He is currently Head of Creative Learning at Theatre Royal, Bury St Edmunds.
Before this he worked as a freelance pracitioner on a range of projects for New Wolsey Theatre, Ipswich

David specialises in work with Young People and Communities and has led learning departments across the country.
David has also created his own work as a Theatre Maker including two semi- autobiographical solo shows 'Anyway' in 2009/2010 and 'There Was A Boy' as part of his DYCP in 2021, which is currently in development.
As a Creative Learning practitioner David is passionate about engaging within the community and has run workshops and projects with young people, SEN groups, over 55's and charities including The YMCA, FOCUS 12, Women's Refuge, The Benjamin Foundation and Children's University
David specialises in work with those who have SEN and are neurodivergent

After training at Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts he worked as an Actor & Musician before moving into directing. He has trained and worked with different companies such as Hull Truck Theatre. as their Creative Learning Officer & Youth Theatre Director, Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds as an Associate Artist, Gecko Theatre training under Associate Director Rich Rusk and has collaborated on projects with companies such as Pilot Theatre and Common Ground Theatre Company. As a facilitator David has also worked for Sheffield Theatres and ALRANorth. David is also member of The Young Vic Genesis Director's Network
and JMK Trust Regional Directors Scheme.
David works with a diverse range of influences and has experience directing professional casts and young people on both small and large scale projects. Through working as a director, he supports performers, helps them push themselves into understanding character and motive within a piece of theatre and being brave with choices.
David prides himself on evoking a inclusive company spirit and positive mentality in a rehearsal room and on stage.
David has built meaningful and cohesive relationships within his creative teams as well as bringing a fresh and adaptable approach to ones that he has formed whilst working with new clients.
